Electronic Design for Scientific Testing and Measuring Devices
Your product’s output is a number that someone is going to act on. When measurement matters, the electronics in your device are not a supporting system, they are the result.
Ignys – We measure twice so your device will cut once, time after time
- We are the go-to specialist hardware and embedded firmware electronics team for companies building test, measurement and scientific instruments
- Precision analogue signal chains, data acquisition, instrument firmware with calibration you can rely on
- Your IP is yours
- ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified

Talk to us about scientific instrument product development
Precision first electronic design for products when precision is the product
An instrument is only as good as the number it reports, and that number is an electronics problem long before it is a measurement-science one. Its real accuracy is set by the signal chain, the references and the layout, not by the sensor datasheet alone, and it has to hold over temperature, time and a full production run. That is the capability teams most often cannot resource in house at the moment they need it, and it is the part we take on.
We aren’t your typical run-of-the-mill consultancy with barriers between you and our engineers. We’re a specialist embedded electronics lab who work hands on with Product Leads, R&D Managers, Innovation Managers and Heads of Engineering in organisations who need additional expertise to get their device to market, quickly, professionally and with confidence.
You keep ownership of the measurement science and the product. We take on the electronics that decide whether it performs. We give your stakeholders the confidence that risk is being managed appropriately and you’ll end up with a a market ready, robust final product.
Accurate analogue and the signal chain
We design the signal chain your instrument’s accuracy actually depends on: low-noise amplification, instrumentation and precision front ends, and the grounding, guarding and layout that decide the noise floor. We budget the error sources before layout rather than discovering them at test, because an instrument’s real accuracy is set by the weakest link in the chain, not by the ADC on the datasheet.

Data acquisition and conversion
We design the acquisition architecture around what you are actually measuring: converter selection, sampling and timing, anti-alias filtering, and the digital capture, whether that is a microcontroller, an FPGA or a streamed interface to a host. The resolution you put on the box has to survive contact with a real PCB, and we design so that it does.
References, calibration and drift
An instrument that is accurate on the bench and out of specification in a cold warehouse has been sampled, not designed. We design the references, the drift budget and the calibration architecture so the product holds its specification over temperature, time and supply, and so it can be calibrated economically in production and re-calibrated in the field. Where your customers need traceable calibration, we design the product so that route is straightforward and repeatable.
Isolation, EMC and compliance
Instruments that connect to the outside world carry risk that self-contained products do not, and measurement products are judged twice on EMC: they have to meet the limits, and keep measuring correctly while being deliberately interfered with. We design the isolation, the safety architecture and the EMC from the start, to the right standard for your product, which for measurement, control and laboratory equipment is usually IEC 61010 and its EMC counterpart. We scope which parts apply at the outset, when it is cheap to get right, and carry the evidence as the programme runs. For more detail on how we can help ensure you stay compliant, head over to our electronic product compliance page.
Firmware and instrument interfaces
We develop the instrument firmware and the interfaces your customers expect, from the measurement modes and signal processing to the command sets, protocols and drivers that let an instrument drop into a customer’s test framework. And we design the data integrity a measurement product lives on: trustworthy timestamps, fault and over-range reporting, and updates that cannot leave the instrument in an ambiguous calibration state.
From bench instrument to embedded module
Precision measurement is the same discipline whether it ends up in a rack instrument, a portable analyser, an embedded sensor module or a piece of scientific apparatus, and the transferable part is the difficult part: the signal chain, the references, the isolation and the calibration. What differs is the packaging and the specific claim your product has to stand behind, from a metrological traceability route to a laboratory data-integrity regime. We build the electronics to suit the claim you need to make, so the same core capability serves a one-off scientific instrument and a product heading for volume.
Across the instrument range
Every instrument is built on the same electronics core: precision measurement, conversion, references, isolation, firmware and connectivity. That is our day-to-day work, and it applies whether the product is a bench instrument, a portable analyser, an embedded sensor module or a scientific device. What changes between them is the sector-specific requirement sitting on top, from a metrological traceability route to a laboratory data-integrity regime, and we scope that into the programme from the start, exactly as we scope the compliance route for any product.

Recovering product development that has stalled
Measurement problems are genuinely hard, and a proportion of our instrumentation work is remedial. Needing help to cross the line is not failure, it’s not giving up. So, there is no shame in arriving with a board that will not hit its noise floor.
Some common situations:
- The prototype meets specification on one board and not on the next three
- Noise floor or accuracy is short of target and the cause has not been isolated
- The instrument passes on the bench and fails EMC immunity
- Readings drift with temperature, warm-up or supply and nobody can characterise why
- A key converter, reference or microcontroller has gone end of life
- The product works but cannot be manufactured or calibrated at sensible cost
Is this you?
- You produce test equipment, measurement instruments, laboratory or scientific devices, process instrumentation or sensing products where accuracy is the selling point
- Precision analogue, low-noise layout, EMC or instrument firmware isn’t a deep in-house capability
- You sit in an innovation, product development or R&D function with an approved business case and a deadline
- You need a partner your internal stakeholders can be confident with, not an individual contractor
- You want the risk in your product development schedule managed, not the hours filled
We’re probably not right for you if you want to buy engineering hours to direct yourself, or if the concept has no commercial case behind it yet. If you’re earlier than that, we’d suggest reaching out to us for a Discovery Workshop or Feasibility Study first.
