Beating The Blue Monday Blues

“How does it feel…?”

Labelled “the most depressing day of the year” Blue Monday is upon us again.

For those not familiar, Blue Monday falls on the third Monday of January and, according to some it is the most depressing day of the year. Whether you put stock into the pseudoscience of Blue Monday, or not; January often feels like the darkest and longest of the winter months.

So, to help bust the winter blues, we asked the team at Ignys what helps them lift their spirits and keep buoyant when those long, cold nights draw in…

“Winter can be a bit depressing, can’t it? I find trying to stay active as possible helps me stay positive. Bike rides are great, something about the cold air on your face while getting up to speed. It doesn’t have to be as exertive though, a short walk can also do the trick.”

Ty

“This time of year, the only remedy is indulgence. There’s plenty of post-Christmas chocolate and cheese left over, seems a shame to waste it – especially when there’s plenty of box sets to catch up on.”

Satvir

“I find good mental health means keeping my brain active. Jigsaw puzzles are a great way to spend an evening. 1,500 pieces at an absolute minimum, with a cream soda at the ready, perfection.”

Jed

“This winter we invested in a sunrise alarm clock. I hadn’t realised how much waking in the dark would affect my mood; I feel much more energised waking up to a simulated sunrise. It felt an extravagant purchase but one I’d recommend.”

Jason

“We’re making a conscious effort to get a bit healthier this year; and I have to say eating better, not drinking alcohol and swimming every day has done me the world of good. I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Neale

“My winter top tip is organisation, specifically prepping food. Knowing I have some warm, delicious and hearty lunches waiting for me at midday is a great comfort. It’s a daily treat and something I really look forward to!”

Maria

“I really enjoy my work, it keeps my mind active and engaged. So, when it comes to down time, a few episodes of my current box set are in order. If it’s accompanied at the end of the week with a cheeky dram, all the better.”

Stephen

“There’s nothing that makes me happier than a good cup of tea and an hour or two with my guitar. Learning a new tune or perfecting a part I’ve been working on for a while is so rewarding.”

Ahnaf

“I’m embracing my 30’s in a big way this year, including how I like to unwind. So, a generous glass of wine after a long walk and cuddles on the sofa with the dog, it is my absolute heaven at the moment.”

Poppy

“I’m never happier than when I’m climbing. I climb most days and if I can get one in before work, it really sets me up for the day.”

Toby

“Loosing a dozen arrows does my mental health a world of good – I highly recommend!”
