What MG Products says about their great test fixture range: “We have created a unique mechanical click system using ball bearings and guiding sleeves. The UUT is connected to the spring contact pins, which are connected to the testing environment in a completely linear fashion.

Connecting the UUT to probes can be approached both from the top and the bottom and, optionally, even from the side. The ergonomic housing provides generous space for additional measuring electronics. The back and bottom of the housing can be adapted to the various test system interfaces.”

What is a test fixture?

A test fixture, or test jig, is equipment that provides quick, repeatable electrical connections to assembled printed circuit boards.

How do test fixtures work?

A test fixture solution tests populated PCBs before they are assembled into products. Catching a problem early saves time, cost and reputation.

Is it essential to test each pcb?

This is a question of risk. What happens if the product needs to be made correctly? Is the PCBA part of a safety-critical system or a sub assembly in a larger build that is difficult to access once built? Do your customers expect the product to work out of the box, or do they accept some returns?

Why is a parallel closing action significant?

Cheap fixtures with a hinge mechanism apply the closing force to the first row of test pins. The force then progressively transfers onto the other pins. The pins and PCBA can be damaged, and some pins may not connect properly. With a parallel closing action, the test pins are connected evenly to the PCBA and the contact force is shared between the pins.

How much does a test fixture cost?

The cost depends on the size of the unit under test, the number of test pins, and the location of the pins, i.e., top or bottom test points. Custom electronics and software may then also be required to make the tests.
